Is it safe to swim at Polihale today?
No. Polihale has a brutal shorebreak, no lifeguard, and a record of fatalities, and it's an hour from the nearest hospital down a dirt road. It is a sunset-and-stargazing beach. Stay out of the water. For a west-side swim, Salt Pond's protected coves are the safe choice.
How do you get to Polihale?
A five-mile unpaved road past Kekaha; 4WD is strongly recommended and there are no facilities. Don't attempt it in heavy rain.
Why is Polihale so dangerous?
Open ocean meets a steep beach with a heavy, dumping shorebreak and powerful current, with no lifeguard and no quick rescue. It's beautiful to look at and unsafe to swim.
